(though very dangerous at 9.5%)

Once gave my mate's mom a bottle of Chimay Blue after a weekend beer trip to Brussels. We found her 20 mins later fast asleep on the couch where she stayed all night 😂

As a fan of stouts and porters, I have to be careful as so many of the modern 'craft' beers are around 12-13%

Some of them are well worth trying, but yeah, make sure you fit stabilisers first....

Chimay Blue is fairly cheap here (see above a couple of pages) so I actually use it for beef stews and cottage pies - makes a mean gravy!

A marvellous beer, my intro to Belgian beer almost 40 years ago. And the Westmalle Tripel is possibly the finest beer on the planet imo (though very dangerous at 9.5%)

Was that bottle or draught, btw? The bottled is far better - and can be laid down a few years for the yeast to further condition it 🙂

I do enjoy a Westmalle Tripel and as you say one of the finest ...
I enjoyed one back in the summer before boarding the Eurostar at the Café SAS outside Brussel-Midi ... 👍
Nice bar at the back entrance to Midi.

Returned to my local craft beer establishment for some further Westmalle investigation. They still had the dubbel on draft but decided to try it from the bottle. Definitely different to the draft but both exceptional.

Have returned home with a bottle of the trippel. Just building myself up to opening it - the ABV definitely requires a bit of caution.
