Yup, I have two. They make a nice little ting.

I'd say 'both' are best. I usually 'ting' some distance away, giving the folk plenty of time. If they don't hear me I'll ting and say excuse me. If they've heard me, I always say thank you. It's met be 'your welcome' / 'no problem' / 'have a good ride'.

A bell is useful for canal bridges as you can't always see round the other side, so even taking it slowly, a bell helps warn others that there is a bike there.

To be honest, there is nothing better than being respectful for others.

Pretty much our approach too.

I have a crane, stem mounted brass afair that makes a belting ding.
even been told my bells "too bloody loud" lol.

On the bikes without one I just bawl passing on the left / right .

I put a Spurcycle bell on my bike, extravagant but so nicely made. A couple of tings on the bell is good for alerting horses that I'm on the way and I usually get a cut glass crystal "thank you" from the well heeled riders too.

Sorry to resurrect this - but I assume it is uncool to have one on a road bike?
I live close to where there are lots of walkers and most of the time walkers have no idea I am approaching them?
Should I just hurl expletives?
I honestly don't know whether to purchase a bell or not?

Thanks T.M.H.N.E.T
The average walker around here is eighty years old.
Maybe a bell will just give most people a cardiac.

Buy one. Much less cool to scare walkers by shouting or startling or skimming.

I find a cheery "Good morning/afternoon" is usually met with a grateful response.
