Viewranger has a 'buddy beacon' feature, but not sure if its available on a free version of the app.

You really want your other half tracking you, just remember to turn it off when your finished. Move bike might be worth a go.

endomondo definitely does this for free. Just check your privacy settings.

If your wife has an account, then you can make her your friend, and then let friends see your rides, or just make them all public.

I have endomondo too but that didnt work - added my son as a friend so my wife could go onto his profile and track me but she couldn`t - might have been a case of operator error tho ;)

Yeah, essentially the phone is recording it's GPS co-ordinates, then sending the co-ordinates over 3G back to the app providers servers. A Strava type run without realtime tracking just records GPS readings on the phone and then uploads them when you get back home, so no data needed.

Depending on where you ride you might find data coverage is sparse especially in county lanes and wooded valleys.

Endomondo works without data on, too, bit if it's on it continuously uploads your ride data

My partner decided to "live facebook" my first Dunwich Dynamo, with a glass of whisky in his hand. Apparently my signal stopped for several hours in the middle of nowhere.

If you have an Android, linked to a Google account, she can track you.

Google "Android Device Manager" and simply log in as your Google account. This can be done from anywhere with an Internet connection - I believe even an iPhone though I haven't tested that. It then offers live tracking of all your Google affiliated devices, for free.

I'm amazed more people don't know about this - everyone knows about find my iPhone but the android equivalent is often overlooked!

:edit:

The phone will need to have both a GPS signal and a mobile data signal to be able to send and receive data, so if you are cycling or in the sticks where you don't get a signal it won't work.
Good to know, I want to track my sons whereabouts when he's playing out

Endomondo can do it but you have to set your location as public so anybody can see where you are.

Bad if you fancy getting robbed while you're out.

You also don't need a separate account on endomondo, or public workouts. My family ( know the endomondo password and can log on and see the route with a data signal on my phone.

Of course, but it does catch up if you've been in a no signal area, but the no signal part can make them worry, as it doesn't update.
