Best Bike, Minimum 105, Carbon & Hydraulic Discs

I came from an MTB background and have no problem with road caliper brakes, in my opinion there isn't the same need as there is on an MTB. I have just purchased yet another road bike and chose to stay away from disc brakes again, like you I have been underwhelmed by cable discs and whilst hydraulics are great I don't think they are worth the huge outlay unless you are taking the bike off Tarmac roads. Personally, I would be sticking a grand back in my pocket and getting something up to a maximum of £1000 that still gets the full Ultegra and carbon experience.

I have just purchased a Canyon Endurace, but this is internet shopping, so no testing a bike for fit. That takes quite a leap of faith and I would not recommend doing that for a first road bike purchase. It may not work out perfectly for me and a know exactly the geometry I require.

Others bikes I was looking at include, Cannondale Synapse, Trek Domane, Ribble Sportive, Giant Defy and a Rose. However, what is good for me maybe terrible for you. I would bounce around as many shops as you can, test ride as many as you an as well until you get a feel for what you like. You are coming up to the time of year where prices on 2015 bikes start to really plummet so assuming you find something that fits you may get a good bargain.

You could get one of these for £2000 if you stick with rim brakes. Just to reiterate what was posted elsewhere on the thread, those with a MTB background who also ride on the road that i know reckon that rim brakes are perfectly adequate especially as you go up the groupset ladder to 105 or equivalent and beyond.

Hydraulic discs, carbon....then its the cannondale ultegra......or spend a little more and get something custom built, plenty of options at the 2k mark

This was highlighted in a recent review in one of the mags and was part of the reason I spent a short while shying away from a Cervelo R3, but I got chatting to a bloke in the LBS with an R2 one morning, who was well into his sixties who said that if it had been too low at the front he wouldn't be riding it. The R2 and R3 are longer in the headtube I believe than images may suggest. I agree with the Defy/Roubaix comparisons put against an R2 though. It all comes down to what the OP wants to spend 2K on. I am no racer and am moving towards my late fifties and got increasingly frustrated in my recent bike search when as a random customer in a variety of LBSs, Evans and independents alike I was pointed towards Sportive orientated bikes every time. One even suggested that I would be foolhardy to look at anything else.

You can buy a pair of shoes for £100's. You can also buy shoes that don't have a brand name on for much less for the same or better quality.

Why suggest the OP spends his budget when there are many options for less and made up of better components?

It's false logic.

For a first bike, I still suggest Planet X, Dolan, Ribble or even Decathlon. Sod paying potentially over £1000 more for the same quality frame, probably made in the same factory, for a bike that doesn't even include a full group set.

FWIW you seem to have given good advice to the OP in the thread. The whole point about someone coming on here and asking questions is that they get answers to their questions. If they represent a wide variety of viewpoints then so be it. Doesn't alter the fact that the OP has 2K to spend.

I get the distinct impression that the OP has a figure in his head, but no real reasoning why. While 2 grand obviously gets you a better bike than one for half the price, if all you're doing is social riding, you don't need it. That's sensible advice.
I've given what I think is a really good option in a CAAD12 (possibly an even better frame than CF at that price point), but you can spend less than that and get a very nice bike that'll fill the OP's requirements and then some. Apologies if that offended you in some way.
