My wife's car is one of these. So already has roof bars.

The rear carrier that I have is ok, but don't know if I'd fully trust it on any kind of distance.

I looked up roof carrier and there seems to be a plethora of options. Tyre mount, fork mount, frame mount.

Can someone guide me through this? I don't want to end up with something crap that fails and wrecks the bikes and the car in one foul swoop.

I've just gone to towbar mounted & now wouldn't go back to roof bar racks. Not going to be the cheapest option but in my opinion the best.

Check with your local Citroen dealer. Mine did me a set of genuine Citroen roof bars and a bike carrier (all Thule kit branded with the Citroen logo) including fitting, for less than Halfords could supply them for. :okay:

All top notch stuff and held the bike rock steady at 70mph on the A1.

I took three road bikes to Lyon and back on a strap-on rear carrier. It was only a year later I realised that the tailgate was made of plastic...
Can you not get the bike inside? That would always be my choice if possible.

I've always gone with roof mounted - generally Atera bars (great quality, and sold assembled for your car, so none of that buy some bars and buy a foot kit malarkey) and initially Cruz Bici racks (~£20 ea, but a bit agricultural) then Thule Freerides (both framemount options). The roofbars get sold on each time we sell the car, and we usually get £40ish towards the next set that way, although our Astra bars, and Zafira bars went for £50. Remove the bars between trips to keep them in the best condition.

On trips where we only take one bike, we've often mounted a roofbox alongside - another advantage of roofbars if you need extra luggage capacity, and don't always need to carry a roof's worth of bikes.

We've looked at towbar mounted carriers from time to time, but have never been able to justify the extra cost (I can reach the roof to mount bikes ok, and we have no other need for a towbar).
