I went to Pedal Precision at the MCR velodrome, Richard there was pretty good, not only did he make adjustments to my bike, cleats and shoes, he also did a biomechanical assessment which told me which off bike exercises I should be doing in order to improve my overall biking comfort.

Google would have saved you much time and effort on that score.

See your other post about bum pain. Different manufacturers use the same pads manufactured in the same factory and a thick squashy pad is, in my opinion, not the answer as it makes your bum sweat and allows your sit bones to sink into the padding, transferring the load to soft tissue. See my reply there about the importance of correct setup.

I can't argue about the science behind your reasoning but if I have to sit on a hard bench for any length of time and have the chance of putting a layer of foam between it and my bum........I know which choice I would make.

The stuff about shorts padding, sit bones etc.

Mind you, if I needed help with saddle adjustments and the like I'm jiggered if I'm going to spend £100+ on it.

I disagree, it's a serious subject. And I'm always the first to complain about quackery.

I wouldn't go so far to say bike fit per se is quackery, but which of the different systems is THE one? They can't all be right, as they all somewhat contradict each other in some often quite fundamental points.

There are some fundamental points that can't differ like saddle height and angle. You see so many who have it wrong though.

How can that be guaranteed quantified by a bike fit though? It just seems bonkers to pay good money to someone who's (probably) not actually a trained anatomist/physiologist to have them tell you something you can work out yourself, and I can't think of anyone who would know someone's body better than the person whose body it is.

Raise the saddle.
Move the seat forward.
Change the seat angle.
Drop the handle bars.

Yes, adjust reach, angle of bars and hoods, even width of bars and crank length and pedal distance from centre in an extreme case. And yes, if no amount of fiddling fixes the problem, change to a different shape of bike.

I'm sorry - how do you adjust the reach or width of the bars?

Mine also included cleat adjustment and having a little spacer added to one peddle, which basically straightens my right foot as I peddle. I was told that this would feel a little odd for a week, but then the knee and groin pain I was experiencing should go. They were spot on. Also included a new saddle so I now have a much more comfortable ride all round. Absolutely chuffed and worth every penny IMHO.
