Personally I'd be going round and refusing to leave without my bike.

Sounds as if you aren't the only one this chap owes money to or has bikes as well... be nice if you knew anyone else who uses/used him

This won't help Sara_H, but is kind of related...
I had some work done on my roadie last year (new chainset, cranks, cassette, derailleur, brifters). It was a fairly big shop, with loads of mechanics and customers. My bike 'fell between' two mechanics... one went on hols, didn't 'hand over' the job properly, and it sat there for two weeks having nowt done on it (and I was busy, so hadn't phoned up for a week).
When I did, and the realised what had happened, they were really apologetic, and did the job for me 'parts only' (let me off labour charges). Which was nice, I guess.

No chance, I can only just manage the ones I've already got, without kidnapping another one.

There's your answer then, go and drop your kids off at his house and you will get your bike back in a jiffy. Have you been round there yet ?
