I'd probably use the word shameful on someone who molested sheep, not someone who admits they're not too hot on mechanics. Each to their own though!

What you got against people from wales? They seem ok to me.

I'd never changed a cassette before either, Watched a total of two Youtube vids, bought the tools and the cassette and did the job myself.

Arguably, patching a tube is more complicated.

I don't do that either although that's because life's too short to be patchIng tubes

I bought the bike tool kit from lidl.

Best £30 ive ever spent.

Changed the rear mech, chain rear cassette so i guess it paid for it the 1st time i used ir.

Youtube is great for learning.

Crankarm also built his own house, grows all his own food, does his own dentistry and even delivered himself from his mother's womb.

Only lazy morons need a midwife!

Yes, I have no great love of or skill for fettling, but getting the tools for and changing the cassette on the bike has been extremely useful (and is only a 10-minute job, even for a numpty like me). It is worth the effort and expense, if you're clocking up serious miles, as apart from tubes, tyres, brake blocks and chains, the cassette is the next most frequently changed item.

My lbs used a vice when replacing a cassette last week - and not knowing what I was doing is a good reason IMHO to let someone else do it

I'd not go there. The lbs that was associated with our club was known to use big wrenches and hammers, hence none of the riders actually had any mech work done by him, we did it ourselves and just ordered parts via him.

TBH, there are many folk who aren't good with maintaining bikes. You should have heard the noises coming from fairly new, flash bikes with STI/Ergo at any slight hill on the Manchester 100. Crash bang, chatter, clunk rattle. Jesus  My old SIS downtube shifters... click click gears changed ! PS I am obsessive, and the guys would tell you that.

Not everyone is the same we have to accept that.
I have been messin with bikes since i was a kid, dad drove a skip lorry and often bought me home an old bike.
I moved on from that to motorbikes lawnmowers and just about anything that took my fancy.
If im up to my armpits in oil and grease im in my element.
I am sometimes shocked to se people havin a bike serviced or fixed, please read this next bit.
ITS NOT EVERYONES cup of tea.
Not everyone likes to get greasy and oily, or maybe just dont know what they are doing and leave it to the people who do.
Hope the bike gets sorted soon...
