last month smugness for me was getting on my bike again for the first time since a back operation in Feb 2011
But apparently that's shameful because I didnt strip down the bike and rebuild it with my eyes closed first

Point I'm making why give your bike to an LBS or some one else who is frankly going to bugger it up and charge you a fortune for doing so? Bikes are so simple to maintain.

That is the real advantage of DIY - it is done when you need it to be done and not when the shop can fit you in. I have a stock of things like cables, etc., and if I have a problem on the way home the job can be carried out that evening with the bike ready to take me to work next day. I'd hate to have to drag a bike to a shop to be told that it will take the best part of a couple of weeks before it can be fixed.

Some local bike shops are great and deserve support....others shouldn't be allowed to work on anything better than a Halford's Appolo!
If you are at all mechanically minded - most jobs are fairly easy on a bicycle (as long as it has been well maintained and you have the right tools) but if you are not mechanically minded I don't blame you leaving well alone.... but don't assume that just because you have paid the LBS good money they will have done a good job!
Personally, I love to fettle and am usually fixing a bicycle for somebody or other, and should anyone living in my part of the world (West Norfolk) need a helping hand just get in touch.....happy to teach basic maintenance skills.

Got it back runs smooth now turns out it wasn't aligned right and the gear shifter wasn't working right see shows what I know

Haha wen out before to get 2 koms there's a setof,lights in the middle and everytime I got near them they changed :@ so no koms for me

Your point was that only the OP could possibly know how to fix his bike even though he didn't and everyone more qualified than him would only make it worse.
Which is just completely and utterly bizarre logic on your part.
