Cars have alarms, immobilisers, number plates, vin, keys etc

That said I have had a car nicked more recently than a bike

Were you covering at home, away from home, personal injury, 3rd party etc. how much would it be if you quoted each separately say? What sort of postcode do you live in? You used to be able to check the rating online.

Talk to your home insurer, has got to be less...IF they'll cover

Im also on the lookout for Bike insurance - let me know if you find any good deals. My home insurance with Direct Line only goes upto £1000 a bike. Might see how much to add extra on at the weekend.
Cant let the wife overhear how much the bikes are worth thou....

Looking into this at the mo, purely for theft cover. I have read my household policy and only covers upto £500. Got several bike specific quotes on £750 cover for less than a fiver a month.

Surely you can add valuable items (over £500 limit) to nearly all home policies. My policy asks for serial number for any bike over £500, and the cost of cover is reasonable.

This is ridiculous! I phoned my home insurance company earlier, they already insure my £1500 bike for £36 extra, asked them about my new Scott and they quoted £390. That's nearly 3 times what I pay for my home and contents cover!

Then tried specialist bike insurers and it's coming in at least as much, some are quoting £500+. I don't even want it covered for theft away from home (unless it's forcibly taken) as it's never ever left locked up unattended and never will be.
