Bike storage - hung on end?

Hello,

I'm planning one of the last parts of our house renovation, the bike storage and downstairs loo.

The loo is already in place, just waiting for it's cubicle building around it, it'll be a similar size to a standard cubicle in a public toilet - details beyond this are irrelevant, lets talk about bikes…

so, next to this I'm wanting to store, currently, four adult bikes and I'd like to be able to walk into the room and with minimum faff, get any of the four bikes out. This is because my bikes get used most so are last in the stack, this means the wife struggles to get at hers due to the effort involved and fear of scratching pedals on frames

I'm thinking hanging them by front wheel / back wheel / front wheel / back wheel from hooks on the underside of a storage shelf (might as well use the room height) is the way to go,

However, while our daughter's balance bike takes up little room currently, at some point I'm hoping she'll have at least one bike to join us on, possibly even a road & mountain bike (to match us) as we do cycling as a family activity.

There is also the possibility of another child in the future also having bikes.

so, I'm after advice on storage, the floor space is 4ft x 4ft (possibly being a bit conservative with that)
Ceiling height is above 6ft and rising towards the back wall.

Photos of how you've done this would be appreciated.

This is my favourite cafe in York. You could line something like this up against your wall.

8ft ceiling in our garage so the adult bikes hang from the ceiling, kids bikes on a rack on the floor. We are a family of 5 though so have quite a few bikes... Maybe I don't really need 4 for myself...

Yes it does. The peg is plastic coated to stop scratches. There is a short length of "side" where the back wheel sits which you can see on the empty one.

Get the hooks a little closer to the wall than in that shot, then you can wheel the bike up the wall and hook it on without needing to lift it clear from the wall, if you get my meaning. Ideally the hooks would be a wheel radius away from the wall.

These - albeit mine were from fleabay for a similar price. Got four bikes hanging from them in a very small space. Hang them alternate bars up / bars down and at slightly different heights.

finally getting round to doing this,

What spacing do you have the hooks, looking to have all bikes front wheel up I calculate 2ft width per bike making 6 bikes take up 7ft

I have a 7ft wall, but it wipes out most of the rest of my storage space which isn't great. it also is not tall enough to stagger the bikes vertically.

I like this spacing idea. Will definitely be doing this in the man cave sometime.

I use these too, they work well, but find you have to be careful with them if you want the bike to hang perfectly vertical, otherwise they can rotate slightly off to the left or right. This is only an issue where you are fitting your bikes in tightly. I have three closely spaced, I alternate the height so the handlebars don't clash. It helps to put your heavier bikes closer to the ground, so they are easier to get in and out.
