If you are leaving bikes on a boot rack or on the roof, get a long steel cable from " pets at home " pass it through the wheels, frame, seat and what ever else then put the ends in doors and fasten both ends together inside the car. Cables are for use with those ground spikey things you get for dogs and cost around £10.00

That longer clip shows he was pretty determined, nearly had it too. shame the guy behind didn't at least run over the bike he'd dropped.
I wouldn't have. If you get a spoke through your tyre, you'd be vulnerable to attack by a pretty brazen criminal.

What I would have done, however, is lent on the horn and blasted it until everyone one on the street was staring and the thief (oh, "cyclist") had fled the scene, not some polite "pip" after several attempts.

Edit: I watched it again, and the following driver does let the horn blast. It's after the bike would have already been stolen if the thief had twisted the knob enough times, but in fairness, it might take a little while to realise what you are witnessing and react. We have a better view than the following driver.

Have you any pictures of this method in action? I find it hard to imagine that the cables won't in some way be in contact with and subsequently damage the paint work.

I have a seasucker roof rack and currently have zero security with a bike on top.

Just as you thought they could get any more brazen:

"The woman driving the car believes the attempted theft was deliberate"

Love this bit. I was walking alongside the road one day and I saw this bike. I also failed to notice one of my shoe laces became undone and I tripped. When I got up I found that I accidentally stole a bike.

Anyway I would have reverse over the scumbag, maybe even crushed him against the vehicle behind. I would claim I was simply a crap driver and accidentally engaged reverse.
