I've got some bike shops I buy from, who I'm sure are competent mechanics, but there's just no way I'd let anyone work on any of the bikes 'cept me.. and that being the case, I need the tools to do the work myself..

Aside from having spokes tensioned..( I haven't bothered to pick up a spoke tension guage yet though I should) after I've built my own wheels, I just can't bring myself to spend the money to have someone work on the bike who's going to care less about it than I do, is likely to be interrupted 10x while he/she is working on it..

Although I would agree with that, my own collection of tools fits in something little bigger than a shoebox! Apart of course from the stand and track pump.

That's just as well because my other tools comprise

table saw
slide mitre saw
planer
2 * circular saw
combi table and chop saw
demolition hammer
demolition hammer and drill
2 * jig saws
power planer
4 electric drills
several hand saws
numerous chisels
2 * adzes
hand planes
umpteen spanners wrenches and sockets
many many hammers
3 * axes
half a dozen spades
a 6.5 metre scaffold tower
heavy duty sack barrow
light duty sack barrow
assorted crow bars
2 or 3 pick axes
a few site lights
several akros
a cement mixer
4 wheel barrers
a dozen buckets
a chain saw
a swiss army knife

Well, all my tools live in my flat (along with two bikes), as there's nowhere else for them. Anyone who wishes to share that space with me will have to put up with it. I did at least recently clear my sofa of knitting wool so that guests can sit down on it.

And of course, I have no objection to bike or other tools in anyone elses house. Can't imagine being interested in a chap who didn't have a few (or many) tools lying about.

All my tools, including those for hubs and bottom bracket, fit onto a 2 foot x 1 foot shelf in the garage.

Unless you're in the bike repair business, I'd echo that you've got a lot of tools there. The tapping tools aren't exactly needed on a day-to-day basis

Same here, although in our case it's 4 bikes - one each. In a small terraced 2 up 2 down! I don't have any serious bike tools, since I get to borrow down at the Bike Rescue or pay the corner shop to fix my bikes. But what we have usually lives on the mantepiece, along with spare lights and cleaning stuff. And all bike fettling/cleaning happens in the living room, which means you can watch telly and sit on the settee while you clean the bikes. Apart from wheels, which get washed in the bath....

I have most my tools (that includes tools for the cars, power tools for DIY etc.) stored in 3 full height tool chest (Roller base, midbox & topbox). It seems like a lot but some of the tools are very bulky to store (the toe measurement tool takes up draw on its own). My rule is simple - if the tool is less than 3x the cost to have the job done in a shop or if it's something that I'll need to do regularly I buy the tool.

Even as a horder of clutter I find the tool collection of the original poster more than a tad excessive. Every tool that I have ever needed to use on my bikes fits in a shoe box. My touring kit fits in the small pouch of a Camelback Mule.

I'd sell the tools and buy another bike from the proceeds.

My whole house is like a giant disorganised tool box. I reckon there is at least one pile of tools in every room, for various purposes.

Does the roof open up like a toolbox too?

You're never fully tooled up until you have all the tools you are likely to need, in every room you're likely to need them in. I only have the one room, so that's fine - although ideally I'd have a duplicate set at the lock up, to save carrying them back and forth for trike fettling - one always forgets something.

Looks fine to me. And if there is an insistence on cushions, frilly pillow cases, pink or general fluffiness etc in the house, that would be grounds to increase the toolage further should the need arise.

In fairness.. I use the tap sets every time I get a new component.. i always chase the threads out.. in anything.. ..Doesn't matter who you buy it from.. the manufacturers always leave crap in the threads,.. then often anodise over it .
