Bike with bigger back tyre than front

And not talking about a chopper ! Had a chat with an uncle of mine who used to cycle and he mentioned he still had his old steel bike.He mentioned it was a sort of hybrid of its day a sort of cross between a tourer with drop bars but heavy with a "heavy back wheel". I had never heard of such a thing ? Anyone enlighten me ? I think it was a Raleigh.
