Doesn’t the course determine the riders? Or are only the same 5 meant to do all courses? Lee is your climber, Bridgy and AAAC your Sagan/ Boonen and then the rest to suit depending on your league results?

Last time it was the same 5 on each ride. I think it was a case of seeing if there was enough interest to do it. Now we are a few months away and getting organised for another competition with a lot more interest from more riders

Have to use same 5 riders across all 3 courses. That's where tactics can come in. We've got some strong riders joining the CG races now so could be an interesting battle for the 5 places. I'm going to be last but I'm in anyway for the craic :okay:

I like your attitude Whorty - everyone who wants to should have a go - how many other opportunities are we going to get to represent our country?!!

Yeah, all 5 riders do each stage and win points for their team depending on where they finish. Team with most points wins. Last time the three courses were 1. A rolling stage ; 2. A mountain stage; 3. A velodrome stage.

I don't know what it will be this time yet but I assume a similar mix of terrain. I did suggest before that the qualifying league could include the exact same courses we rode last year (with a standard flat stage replacing the velodrome as that can be tricky to include in a league).

Though very new on the scene and more than happy to adibe by anything the more experienced and dare I say it wiser heads decide, I think the idea of selecting by running a league based on last year's routes sounds brilliant. I think mass rides would be best, too simulate the real thing with the possibility of one challenge repeat, meaning everybody could do the three courses twice. We can then have great fun trying to decide the selection criteria, do we want five allrounders, or is a specialist climber worth his lack of weight in gold. I think anybody who takes part should have a say in the team selection..... Secret voting!

From my experience I would expect the selection will be obvious from the results. Whilst riders do have their relative strengths and weaknesses (perhaps with the exception of AAAC who seems to be bloomin good at everything!), over the many leagues we've run, whether mostly uphill, downhill, flat or rolling, the same riders tend to top the league.

Let's see though - will be great if some new riders plus some old faces who haven't been around so much join in and mix things up a bit!

@BILL S can you set up the qualifying league for January? Would be great if as many people as possible join in the live races but personally I don't have a problem with people riding the stages separately if needed - don't want to disadvantage anyone who can't make the live races for any reason.

To make it 4 stages to cover all of January, maybe we could do the stages from last year (plus flat course to replicate velodrome) as mentioned before, plus a long rolling stage to test stamina? Here's my suggestions, but if you think of any better alternatives Bill feel free to replace them:

Rolling stage (from Nations Cup 2017): http://www.bkool.com/profile/detail/293692?durationType=DISTANCE&lapCount=1
Mountain stage (from Nations Cup 2017): http://www.bkool.com/profile/detail/241144?durationType=DISTANCE&lapCount=1
Flat stage: http://www.bkool.com/profile/detail/3085390?durationType=DISTANCE&lapCount=1
Long hard stage: http://www.bkool.com/profile/detail/917951?durationType=DISTANCE&lapCount=1

I've emailed

I've contacted the USA rep. The only downside is the time difference.
I'll check with Jacob what sort of time they are planning to run the races. Last time it was a 9.50am (GMT) start. Am I right in saying most of the US is 6-9 hours behind GMT so only an afternoon start for us would be practical for you guys?

Jacob has confirmed the event will be in the morning as it was last year, as they are restricted by the Saturday opening hours of the shop they use to stage the event. Not helpful to those in the US unfortunately @Randyberlin

On a different point, he's also confirmed the 3 stages for the event will be similar to last time - a flat-ish/rolling stage, a mountain stage, and a velodrome stage - so the proposed routes for the qualifying league should be fine, even if they aren't the exact same routes that will be used this time round

I'll check that I'm able to set up a league that includes all these rides. I must confess that during the last ride (the velodrome) last year I was absolutely knackered and had little left to give. By then I just wanted it to be over. The only flaw I can think of in this qualifying league format is that it will be done on a race by race basis rather than back to back so anyone with excellent stamina/durability may not shine. Very hard to organise everyone to qualify over a three hour period on a certain date so probably this is the best we can do. I'll probably try to set these up well in advance to make sure they can be found in the stage selector when setting up the league. Surprisingly (or maybe not) I've had trouble finding league rides before suggested by others. Anyway, I'll see if I can get it set up in the near future so if there's any problems we'll be able to solve the problem somehow.
