British Cycling Let's ride and personal information

Trying to join Let's ride so I can participate in my local social cycling group. I'm concerned about the amount of personal information required in order to make a profile though. They require home and mobile numbers, date of birth, home address and postcode. I tried filling in the form without them, but it won't let me proceed as this information is mandatory. Anyone with any experience know whether all Let's ride members can view this data? Even if only British cycling can, it still seems an awful lot of data to be giving them.

I very often just put a load of zeros in for my phone number on forms. Often works but some sites are clever and know an invalid number, so a dialing code and a load of zeros is my next entry.

Hi. I'm a regular user of Let's Ride, and I can confirm that other members can not see the personal information you provide.

At least, this is my personal profile, and I can't see any more about anyone else than that.

I think they maybe on dodgy grounds legally asking for date of birth. Organisations are only supposed to hold relevant information and it's hard to justify date of birth as being in that category. Age maybe (under 18 or whatever), dob not so much. My dive club wanted the same. Often I make up a date of birth for such purposes.

Ask them why they need all the info and how they safeguard your details especially with the new rules coming in. What info did you give to BC when you joined?

See if they have a privacy policy which should state what they do with your data, who they share it with, how it is protected, their retention policies, including at what point it is deleted should you close your account.

They do have age-related restrictions on their rides, so I think it could be argued that age is relevant.

Only in the context of the age restrictions. You just need to declare your age in relation to those for them to be able to do their job. The new data protection rules cover this, and they would need to demonstrate that dob is necessary and a simple declaration against the age restrictions is not.

Minimum data collection and retention to carry out a function, legally or otherwise, should be the mantra.

Haven't joined British cycling, I'm only setting up a let's ride profile.
