The clocks go forward by one hour this weekend, which will make the evenings lighter. Watching the BBC Breakfast news this morning and they were debating the pro's and con's of BST all year round.

ROSPA are apparently now in favour as children are more at risk going home after school than in the mornings going to school. In fact the only people against seemed to be farmers ostensibly because it means working extra hours.

Surely farmers work around the prevailing weather conditions and daylight hours to do what has to be done. What's to stop them working the same hours around GMT in the winter?

Start an hour later and work an hour later. Same hours; same as makes no difference or am I missing something?

You're missing the importance of the Scottish vote.

If you made the sun set at about 3pm in the middle of winter rather than the 4pm currently I think I'd lose my mind.

;)

GMT is one hour behind BST in the winter, which would mean in the winter, the sun setting 4pm currently and 5.00pm with BST. I think your mind has already got lost.

If Scotland is so disadvantaged by the BST/GMT saga why not propose that everyone on the Scottish side of the England/Scotland border moves their time zone to their advantage(decided by their MP's and let us in England move to double Summertime. This shift could be carried out over the following year(ie:-a 5 minute shift per month at midnight) so that everone is happy. After all,North America & Canada have multiple Time Zones so two in the UK would be no big deal.Happy & Safe Riding to You All.

Another year goes by, another BST thread and still the government ignores the great CycleChat consensus!

Spring forward and fall back-
Or is it spring back and fall forward!

I have never understood that way of remembering it as it seems useless because it works both ways round.

Basically if we are on BST all the time we will tend to be awake more times when it is light. Today the sunrise was at 5.50am. Most people will waste 1-2 hours of daylight sleeping. I would much rather have that time as daylight in the evening.

We're not the only ones who adjust the clocks to maximise daylight hours.

Other countries, some at different latitudes, do it also, so am not sure how it would impact everybody else.
