Broken brake lights

It must be some kind of conspiracy, or maybe built in obsolescence but have you noticed how many cars have one brake light out?........and most of them are on the right hand side.

Have a look on your next commute and see if it's the same where you are as it is in Bristol.

I've noticed that too... seems to be a UK thing - back in NZ you never used to see it, I think because the equivalent of MOTs are mandatory and have to be done every 6 months... and a broken taillight will cause you to fail.

Some cars have a warning light that tells you a bulb has gone ping, though I didn't appreciate that until a couple of weeks ago when my next door neighbour explained at great length about such a warning light on his Saab, even to the point of insisting I viewed his dash board to see it for myself!!

It's not strange at all. Well over 10% of all cars have faulty lights of some sort. Fronts are even worse for going than brake lights. That said someone on my course at uni ploughed into the back of someone as the HA in their wisdom had an unlit dual carriageway and the other driver certainly did not check on their brake or back lights.

A couple of years ago my VW Polo started playing up. It was really juddery to drive, and would barely start at all.

A quick trip to the garage and I was told that one of the chips under the bonnet had blown. More specifically, the ship that was supposed to figure out when something had gone wrong and warn me about it. Now it had blown up and the car was having a hissy fit.

I've never understood why cars need computer chips.

I have noticed the number of cars too without brake lights (or one without reversing light that was moving towards me without the light working). I usually try and tell the car if its in a queue at traffic lights but sometimes I think by their response they don't care, though the lady this week did thank me.

I'm sure when I was little I remember the police stopping my Dad for having a light not working and telling him off. It seems as if now you wait a year for your MOT to fix the light.

Chips in cars

I've never understood why cars need computer chips.

All modern passenger car internal combustion engines use microprocessors to control the combustion process and minimise the 'nasty' gaseous emissions. Cycle behind an old car to appreciate the progress ;0

(ignore the close overtake!) the Mercedes' brake lights (car in front) appear to be working. In fact it would appear that they never seem to go off!

I once worked with someone who had 40 driving lessons before she realised (was told) that the red lights on the back of cars come on when the car is braking. Scary!!

It is easy to check your lights. Easier in the winter, you just park up making sure there is something in front and behind you, then check indicators, brakes, side lights etc. by checking if the illuminate whatever you have parked near.
