So a freind has offered me a 13 plate v60 Volvo 100k miles 2.0 diesel for trade in money. A few scratches etc but good spec.
Obviously very reliable but a good buy compared to say a Skoda Octavia?

Depends which 2.0 engine it has.

If its the small bore 5 pot, then its liable to be tough.

The 4 pot is a Ford/PSA unit and not the most robust.

But after 11 years it'll likely come down to how diligently it has been maintained rather than any notional idea about one brand being more reliable than another. It takes a lot to kill a 5 pot Volvo, but it is possible to neglect them so badly its uneconomical to get them back on song again.

She's well maintained it. Got the cambelt done etc!

That's why I tend to actually buy my cars outright and then keep them until archaeologists start taking an interest - I don't get bent over and have my pants pulled down by market forces every time a transistor manufacturer in Turkenistan stubs his toe and dies of sepsis.

I have always financed my cars and I have not yet had an issue, if you work with a proper broker like streamline who i previously used, then you shouldn't have issues at least after a couple years you have the option to keep or change, i'd much rather have something new then buy and keep a car for 10 years but suppose thats down to personal preference

So Im going to get a new car in the next couple of weeks and I've narrowed it down to 4 cars...
Skoda fabia estate tdi 2008-12 small + boring...
Skoda Octavia estate tdi 2008-12 large and boring
Peugeot/ Citroen tepee tdi 2008 -15 ex large and extra dull
Mini clubman cooper D 2008 wild card - fun and tiny!

Which would you go for and any others to consider...

I'd go for the Octavia estate. They aren't really that boring, unless you are used to high performance sports cars.

So I've put a deposit on a Octavia 2.0 estate L+K.

Nice car 2.0 but with the hills around here a doubt it's any more economical to run a 1.6l

Dark blue with cream leather interior!
Was part ex at posh 4x4 garage so well looked after by older gent and then has been courtesy car for past month. Full MOT!

Has a bit of turbo whistle if you boot it.

Our ultra reliable 2008 1.6hdi Citroen C4 by Loeb was hit by an inexperienced driver and wrote off last Christmas.

We've been surviving between our mk 1.8 Civic and a 2005 1.3 Jimny convertible which I'd bought only months before the C4 went to car heaven. The Suzuki was only ever meant to be a little fun in the sun or 4x4 in the worst of the winter. It has become a regular feature in our life but I will need to get a 'proper' car soon I think, especially as I want to keep the Jimny good (very little rust for the age), it isn't a fun everyday car, it isn't secure in the slightest (canvas roof and zip out back window) and it doesn't have any heat in the cabin (broken heater matrix - not HGF thankfully).

My current list is as follows:

2015+ Honda Civic Tourer/estate in SR spec - big, sensible but like hen's teeth, esp in NI
Hyundai Veloster Turbo - weird looking thing which I like, pretty quick for what they are but very hard to get in turbo spec - not sensible
2018+ Suzuki Jimny - if I found one under 20k I'd think about it but they're going for silly money - not practical or economical but alot of fun
Wild cards would be a clean Volvo estate like a v70 or DS5
