It was much easier in my day, everything was compatible, between hub gears and between 5 speeds, as there was so little choice. A bit of fettling made it all work in the end.
Now you need to know Japanese and have a special tool for every component.

It does not seem that hard, mind you i do have an engineering background, as for special tools you only need a couple to get you going, but it feels good riding something you have put together yourself.

It certainly was easier back in the 70s & early 80s which was when I first built up a bike from a bare frame. The only specialist bike tools I owned for years were a chain tool and a crank extractor for them new-fangled cotterless jobs.
When I came back to cycling 3 years ago it took me a while (and a few mistaken purchases) before I got to grips with it all, largely thanks to help on here !
