Buying a small 2nd hand motor

What do I need to know?

Got 3-5 grand to spend on a petrol runabout for my daughter. Looking at small French and German cars 10-11-12 plate kind of things.

Thoughts, recommendations please.

Don't bother mentioning daihatsu/hyundai/kia. Not interested.

More accurately I'm lending her a chunk of the cash. I'm a bit suspect of Fiat 500s-I've heard stories about running expense. Mini might be a good option.

No Mini (BMW) will be cheap to run especially as you'll be looking at an older/leggier model as paying a brand premium

Minis are not "mini" anymore, and that irritates me.
