Hi all,

Sorry if this is a really dumb question.

I recently got a secondhand bike and am loving riding around the city but didn't realise how muddy I'd get without a mudguard.

I've been looking into getting mud guards and have found the measurement codes on my tires: 50-559 (26 X 190) c-860-13, which from my basic understanding means the tires are around 26 inches in diameter and 50mm in width.

Now the style of mud guards I like are the fixed types in aluminium (like these https://www.oxfordproducts.com/bicycle/brands/oxford/mudguards/mudguard_set_26_mtb_60mm_silver/) but I can't seem to find any that are 50mm wide for 26 inch tires. Would it be okay just to get 60mm mudguards or would they be too big for my bike.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Best,
NB

I presume its a mountain bike?

Those guards will be fine.

They need to be wider than your tyres (to allow the tyres to go round even with crud collection)
so 60mm should be ok assuming you have the frame clearance

what sort of bike is it and the tyres are they, slick or knobbly or somewhere in between?

and do you have mounting points on the frame?

Thanks. I think it's a mountain bike but I'm not sure. It has thick tires bit no suspension. I've attached some pictures of the bike below.

Thanks for your reply.

They're really thick tires, and pretty bumpy. Here are some pics of them.

I think so but those points already have reflectors attached.

Here are some pics of the bike.

Pop along to any of the many bike shops in Edinburgh and they will be more than willing to supply the correct guards for you. EBC and biketrax offer good impartial service in the city centre.

Thanks for the advice, I live really close to biketrax actually but will it be okay me taking my bike there even though I got it from somewhere else?

Those mudguards are aluminium sandwitched in tough plastic. They are indestructable so it is vital they are fixed at the front with quick release safety fixtures. These are supplied with SKS brand mudguards.

Yes, an LBS will happily sell and fix parts to any bike 👍 (unless filthy dirty)
Thanks for the info, I’ll make sure the bike is sparkling before I go. I got my bike secondhand and was worried bike shops would only see people who had bought their bikes from their shop.
Is there any etiquette I should follow? Am I expected to tip as I’m bringing in a second hand bike.

They will fit - your tyres are 26 x 1.9 so not too wide. I have a similar 'retro' MTB that I can fit guards to it, so long as I'm running tyres under 2 inches. It's currently got 2.4" tyres that are too wide for the guards.
