I've had them as small as a Smart Fortwo, and as large as an XC90, and at 6'4" and 20 stones none of them have left me any more or less fatigued than the next. You're sat down turning a wheel left and right for chrissakes, not pedalling the damn things.

Small cars like Fiat 500s still kill, just like HGVs. I rarely drive in cities, most of my driving is long distance, motorways are the safest roads and my car is ideal for the task. If I didn't drive long distances I’d have a small car, probably an EV or go back to not owning a car, which I did from 2010 to 2016.

My 2016 Range Rover is not a status symbol, it’s a work tool. I’d buy a new RR a Porsche or Aston Martin if I wanted to show off.

S class Merc would be just as relaxing as a Range Rover and a similar price. It's just not 6' tall with a bonnet higher than a child.
It is pretty obvious the car industry has pushed SUV's as a fashion statement at all levels of the market and a lot of motorists have been sucked in hook line and sinker.
All that said there is definitely a requirement for some people to drive them, you live in the country up a muddy track. You are a farmer. You have one to use off roading at the weekends etc etc but for nipping to the shops, a school run, driving to the office or even lugging loads (plenty of big estates available) it is not a necessity it is a trend and not a particularly sensible one at that.

Genuine question, why do you find a smaller car more tiring to drive? I have a Fiat 500, it's like driving a bumper car, put your foot down and steer. It requires about as minimal effort as I can imagine any car requiring to drive it.

my car is worth about £12 k, almost half the price of a new Fiat 500. i dont drive it to the shops or commute.

Where the roads are single track with passing places, we're no one can get by your blotted fat 4x4. On rual roads they're a complete pain. The most impractical vehicle ever made.

I have had a lot of motors over the years, some good some bad, some big some small, but without doubt, the most comfortable and less tiring for long distance driving were the larger less noisy vehicles, statistics may be stacked against them, but I never had an accident in any of them, I found some of the smaller faster vehicles I have had more dangerous, as I was tempted to push them more, but that's more about my bad driving choices than the vehicles, there was no need to thrash them.
