You could do worse than a base Ribble TT frame especially at <£200 in forks.

Sure it's not a stunning looker but it's stiff, has replaceable horizontal drop-outs & is easy to build around.

That's like the definition of cheap and cheerful isn't it? OK I'll put it on the list (reluctantly)

There is always the PX Stealth, life in that old dog! I tried one, but PX were so lame in terms of customer service and knowledge (or willingness) to help me with regards sizing. Thus I wouldn't buy on principal.

They were equally as unhelpful when I gave them a second chance, on some Vision aerobars, didn't buy them.

Not sure if it is that particular Ribble, but someone at our club 10 the other evening was telling me about the Ribble TT frame as he has one, was saying some sort of design issue causes the chain to rub on the frame when you drop into warp drive. He has had it to various bike shops and done some research about it etc and came back with a design issue. No idea re. this myself, other than if it was a design issue, I would be returning it.
I know 3 people with these frames & all 3 are different...

Yeah it's on the list works out the same as that china frameset. Which at least has a certain je ne sais quoi.

As in they have poor QC, various suppliers or as in they keep updating the frame design to iron out issues such as this chain rub thing?
Various suppliers &/or update the design.

One frame only has a profiled down tube. Another has a faired seat tube but round seat stays & short drop out. The last one has an ovaled top tube which is wide rather than tall, flatish triangle stays, both chain & seat, faired seat tube but welded on front mech mount. The picture is yet another variant!

The trouble with Ribble is that I am immediately drawn to one of their pricier offerings as soon as I click on the TT frames button.

Exactly. I then think that's out of the budget, go back to TT frames and then click on the other one again. And keep repeating the process until the negative feedback loop causes me to shut down the browser.

Found this

It's a blatant rip off of the Canyon Speedmax, which was the bike I originally wanted to save up for. Comes with fork, seatpost, bars and brakes at £850 posted, which oddly makes it comparable in overall costs to the cheaper China frames. And I get (sorta) the bike I wanted to begin with. I am so itching to pull the trigger.

Thoughts from the forum?

There are a few versions similar to that, I gather they are pretty good (a club mate has one variant).

Here is a pic of another similar bike:
