Can I change from an 8 spd to 9 speed cassette?

If I upgrade shifters to 9 speed, can I change my rear cassette to a 9 speed as well? I currently have an 8 speed cassette, and just wanted to make sure it would fit on the wheel etc.

if the hub is a shimano freehub a 9 speed will fit without any problem. if it campagnolo i'm not to sure someone else will know

Don't worry OP - this is an old & rare Shimano freehub which you won't have.

Which reminds me about some unusual 8 speed freewheels I found for sale the other day, up to 11-34, when most freewheels are 5 to 7 speed, AND 13-XX!

Dunno about their hub/shifter compatibility though.

Thanks What about the front chainset, will this work fine? I was always under the impression that it would until I saw this: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40621 which says it's compatible (only?) with 8 speed chains. This isn't the chain ring I have, but I just wondered if it would be an issue?

See this. I use a 9 speed chain with a 1980 chainset with no problem whatsoever.

If you have a Shimano cassette you shouldn't use an 8 speed chain with a 9 speed cassette.
