You can get a licence to shoot some non vermin birds, but a total ballache to acquire and they'll typically only allow you to shoot 3, which is no use for either pest control or for satisfying g the blood lust of murder crazed loons like me.
thankfully it is illegal to shoot or persecute them, you will probably be surprised to learn many species of gull are on the rspb's RED list of endangered species. At a guess you are probably complaining about the Herring Gull, and this bird is definitely a RED listed with it's population falling by more than half in the past 40 years - basically we are completely fecking up their environment. If you don't want seabirds scrounging for food in your town, then stop leaving unwanted food lying all over the place, campaign to stop over fishing and reduce your carbon footprint as climate change is already having a major effect on our seas.
Not fast enough though.

I don't think seagulls are a endangered species around here. There are thousands of them!! I heard that putting a fake falcon keeps them away? If so, I will have to invest into one.

Herring gulls are becoming a nuisance around here. Lots of nests, lots of shoot, lots of noise, lots of predation, all the ducklings in the local pond plus other wildfowl nests have been taken, even the crows don't stand a chance. It's only in the last couple of years really.

Seriously? How about all those hanging about rubbish tips and in farmers fields. No matter how much the fish stock rises they are going no where. It's to easy to get food from a tip compared to hard work of catching fish at sea. They are now vermin (those inland) I would have no qualms shooting them inland....as long as I don't get caught!!
PS I doubt there is food of any significance anywhere other than tips.
Would you also see them extinct because they poo on recently washed cars ? I would give them a medal for that. What is wrong with people in these silly little metal boxes with wheels on?

I do think you are correct that it will be difficult to stop them feeding in towns and rubbish dumps, they are by nature scavengers and they are bound to be attracted by our wasteful lifestyles, it is estimated we throw away a third of all our food - 15 million tons of good food we send to landfill and scatter on our streets in the UK - (250million tonnes glbally).
I stopped driving years ago and the last car I owned would have been aesthetically improved by any type of shite. Furthermore I never washed it anyway, I could never see the point.

If they are inland kill them it will have no effect on the population at sea. As far as I am concerned herring gulls are only herring gulls if they live by the sea. Those who live inland are now a different species. I think they should have different name ....minging sea gulls for instance!

Are you talking about household waste? Because I find that difficult to believe. I can't recall the last time I threw any food out.
take a look at this
http://england.lovefoodhatewaste.com/node/2163

or do a search for food waste UK - figures vary from site to site but it is all pretty astonishing.

If you are a regular cyclist you probably don't throw any food out, you are probably like me, peering into pans just before washing up just incase there is an escapee. We never throw out any food either - I cycle 4000 mile a year then we have a dog, then I feed the birds then we have a compost heap - no food goes in our bin
I don't throw food out because there is nothing I won't eat. I have been asked not to lick the plate.
I have no dog at the moment but my mates bitch is looking like she will explode at any moment, so I will have one soon. A lot of dogs are not all that fussy what they will eat.
I have 4 compost bins, more to do with not using it than being an uber composter. Seem to get to many weeds in it. Only use it in the bottom half of deep plant pots or burying it deep so the weeds don't come through.
plus 1 for your first paragraph, minus 20 for your second.
many come in land to breed, nothing wrong in them following the plough or spending time on the river - and the nuisance in towns is down to us attracting them in with easy food. All birds are beautiful and of great importance, its their planet too.
I am also in favour of destroying the eggs of Buzzards or at least the ones that were filmed killing an owl. We don't live in a natural world. That behaviour suggests there are to many of them. Very odd and very unnatural behaviour.
