hang on here firstly I never said anglers shouldn't be there I agree they have as much right as cyclists I am perfectly willing to wait while they move their gear and I asked a legitimate question as to why they need a large pole blocking the towpath, my problem comes from 3 or 4 times today coming across anglers blocking path with poles and gear who REFUSED point blank to even consider moving anything. even though they were blocking the whole width of the towpath most even though I was being reasonable and POLITE at the time refused to even speak or make any effort whatsoever. Although I will admit that anglers who cycle may have a better idea about this. As it happens I do on accasion stop at a certain stretch of locks, the same guy is there every sunday on the piece of ground between locks facing the center of the canal hes the first to say hi every time I see him. Don't think for a minuite every angler is ignorant because most aren't but lets face it a fair few are. and just to put point across I never go faster than walking pace past anglers or dog walkers but I do expect the same courtesy

And I stand corrected the Waterways and Canal trust site says you do not need a licence to cycle on towpaths but Some individual councils Birmingham for example do have licences as a way to get you to agree to their terms and conditions it does depend on the individual council. I did not wish to offend anglers with this post which I odviously did but as I said before I do slow to walking pace as I go past anglers and dog walkers why should I not expect the same courtesy I was actually feeling some compassion towards them until just read comments about cyclists being "knuckledragging louts who should be drowned at birth" and 1 fisherman saying"we need to build Vietnam style booby traps with fishing line across the towpath"

surely the big difference is that cyclists, walkers, dogs and family groups are moving traffic, so while they might compel ome another to slow down, appreciate the view, and consider each others path needs, none of them actually prevent the flow of movement.

whereas a bluddy great pole stretching across the path a foot above the ground, does.

if these "carp poles" are so important, why hasnt shimano redesigned them so they can be mounted from the edge of the bank and not three metres back?

So, a few ignorant anglers refuse to move their poles, a cyclist has to dismount to pass. We don't live in a perfect world inhabited by perfectly reasonable folk. It's something we have to learn to live with and worry about something important.

I don't have a problem with anglers on the Leeds Liverpool canal. I have sometimes dismounted just as anglers have reached for their poles and indicated that they should leave them in place. It really isn't a big deal in the general scheme of things.

What does rattle my cage are the barriers in place on some tow paths which compel the rider to dismount and engage in some 3D chicanery to get past them.

Like others have said, it's no big deal to slow down, stop, chat to the murderers fishermen whilst they move the pole, or you lift your bike over said pole, as lifting 15-20 kg of bike is far easier than lifting a carbon fibre murdering fishing pole weighing in excess of 1.75kg.

What does rattle my cage is when 'someone' puts barriers in place on some cycle paths that are actively promoted as part of a national Cycle Path Network. A network frequented by like-minded people on touring bikes with little things called panniers.

I personally would like the person whose idea it was to put the gates on here.....

...to let me know their preferred lubricant, as I would REALLY like to shove their 'fantastic gates' somewhere.

Aren't you refusing to compromise though? You posted about licenses and checking if they have them as a way of removing them from the path.

That sounds like a vendetta to me. One which you seem willing to drag all local anglers into, involved or not, licensed or not.

avid anglers will pay up to £3k for a pole. dont risk damaging them. anglers usually have to pay to fish. cycling is free. just put up with it. i get the impression many dog walkers feel the same about cyclist.

It's not just cyclists, I've seen an old lady have to step over a pole that sat a good 12inchs above the path. There are selfish, ignorant fisherman just as there are selfish, ignorant cyclists, car drivers, dog walkers, push chair pilots etc
