I've changed from ally to carbon posts on a couple of my bike and not really noticed any difference in comfort. I've also got a Carbon Synapse with the standard ally post and will probably change to the carbon one, mainly because I want to not because I think it'll make the bike more comtortable. Which post have you seen for £40-50 the one I was looking at is this one

I've got a Canondale Caad 10 with alloy seatpost and a Van Nicholas Yukon, which came with a carbon seatpost. I sometimes swap saddle and seatpost from one bike to the other. I haven't noticed one jot of difference.

As for aluminium giving a "harsh ride", well, my Caad 10 gives a smoother ride than my titanium Yukon. The bike with the harshest ride is the carbon Focus Cayo. Wheels, tyres and tyre pressure all play a bigger role in comfort than frame material - as of course does geometry.
