I've just spent my xmas bonus on a Merlin C110 and i'm wondering where do I clamp the frame in the workstand. I read some years back that you have to clamp the seatpost is this correct?

Get a old / cheap alloy post and clamp to that?

this will be the cheapest way of doing it there is things you can buy that will do it but they are pricey.

Just wrap the frame in an old towel, where the stand grabs onto the bike??
crunCH. AAAAAAAAAAARGGHH!

Clamp the seatpost, carbon or otherwise. Carbon posts are designed to be clamped by the seat collar so it is not an issue.

I guess it depends how hard you're clamping it.

If just putting it on the stand to, say, adjust the derailleurs, you wouldn't clamp it that hard, just enough to prevent it falling out of the stand.

But if wanting to really heave at something, I wouldn't be that enthusiastic winding a clamp up really tight on any sort of tube, be it carbon, thin-walled aluminium or steel.

I keep a cheap seat post (£2.99) in my toolbox and just swap it in and clamp it in the stand.

Only downside is that the proper post and seat gets neglected in the wash!

In 30 years of fettling i have never used a bikestand, so it may just be possible to fettle without clamping anything. Of course this will go against your wish to use a bikestand but you never know, it might just work ;)

I survived for thirty years without one, but although mine's not so good, I wouldn't be without it.

And at least I know what I want now.

Yeah, but when do you want it?
