so halve that and you get the right answer

They kinda ruined it by explicitly writing a pair of simultaneous equations on the board which makes it trivial.
It is a bit of a head scratcher without that analysis.
Only because the phrase 'one pound more' is ambiguous.

I do find people's approach to it is interesting
some people go for a guess and wonder why it is wrong
some go direct to maths and use that - so equations
I tend to go for a guess but check it and work out why it is wrong and use that to correct it using arithmetic rather than equations
even though I was always good at maths at school
Which does tend to be my approach to life
have a guess and see if it works - if it doesn't work out why and correct it
I used thata lot when writing complex programs in IT and it worked well
but others were better because they worked it all out properly before they started
I would have been a problem working on things like aircraft and Space missions where "It went wrong oh dear" is not quite the way they need to do things!
but normal life and it works fairly well - you just need to check the risk of failure!

Yeah, I’ve got a friend with a fancy toilet, when you walk into the bathroom the lid automatically lifts and the bowl lights up. Kinda stupid if you’ve just walked in to wash your hands.
It also flushes when you are done, except it’s a poor judge of what done is so it usually flushes prematurely. ( I guess it gets over excited )
its got a heated seat and is supposed to clean and dry your butt but I’ve not needed to try those options.
a fine waste of $20,000CDN I’d say.
toilets, like bicycles, shouldn’t need electricity to work… it’s just wrong.
