I'd even try and get a coherent appraisal of why their bike would be worth any more than what they'd taken out of the wall, stroke my chin, and take the lesser worth one, just out of respect for their playing the game.

put yourself in their shoes, either you're a scally bike thief, or a mugger, but not usually an eclectic mix of the two...

if you're a scally bike thief wanting a bike to flog to some dodgy geezer in the pub, you just try and find one that's not locked up very well and bolt cropper it, then leg it as fast as possible - you don't risk getting twatted by trying to mug someone who's waiting at the cash machine...

if you're a mugger, you'll mug whoever looks like they've got the most money, regardless of whether or not they've got a bike - and if you're a mugger you're most likely a heroin or crack addict, and as such probably aren't really going to know what to do with a bike.

I usually trackstand while getting money out. It confuses the hell out of the woman behind the counter in my local Barclays.

Where might I find a cash machine that I can reach from my bike without pavement cycling?

Stevenage High Street. The NatWest one between Subway and the betting shop.

Well, you did ask!

I normally take out a hundred quid on Friday lunchtimes from somewhere busy, this will last me a week minimum, sometimes two. Means that I am never left in the position of being without any cash but never use it unless I have to.
