It depends. What is the over-lock-nut-distance and what material the frame is made of?

In which case it can almost certainly be re-spaced if you need a wider hub.
But while you are there check whether it is indeed a cassette and not an old-school freewheel.

For years I was riding a 7 speed in an old Steel frame. I had assumed it was too narrow for a "modern" cassette. I tried it the other day - fitted like a glove. I had been compressing the stays a small amount with the old hub. 1980's frame too.......
