Keep an eye on your CC statements, I have, and many others (see the thread on singletrack forums) have been scamed after using CRC in the last month. I have just had the phone call last night from HSBC saying my card had been scamed. My last transaction was with CRC. O2 vouchers worth £30 was tried but my bank blocked the transaction as they said that my card number was on a list of many, they seem to know which card numbers have been scamed.

Paypal from now on. Be carfull out there!

Be careful not to pin the blame on CRC without substantive evidence - correlation is not cause

Thanks for the tip! I got scammed after transactions at Tesco and the Sony shop (face to face at cash till) and Waterstones online. My guess is that it was the Waterstones site. When I used Waterstones the website acted in a strange way and I got a string of error codes before going on to the next page at which point some of my input had been lost. I told Waterstones but they just sent me a robot reply saying how fantastically secure their computer system was!

Did the OP actually blame CRC or merely relate how the card had been used? Has the OP contacted CRC?

I'd guess that Paypal security is top-notch as with big sites like Amazon. Further down the scale smaller sites must spend less on such matters.

In my case the Credit Card people picked it up before I found out.

I had a cc fraud only last week, for the first time in years of using both CRC and that other fave blame merchant, Wiggle. In fact, my most recent transactions were PayPal/Ebay.

Credit card fraud happens. It's a fact. What I am chuffed about is that the detection systems are so darned good to catch it as well as they do.

The other thing which is worth bearing in mind is how clever some of these malicious activities are. There has been a recent spate of virus attacks spread through seemingly legitimate adverts syndicated to legitimate sites. It's not beyond imagination that a similar process could be used to capture CC info. Or it might be an inside job from a retailer (even CRC) Crooks might sit on that info for months making tracing the source very difficult. As we head into spring, the next batch of numbers is tested before being sold on, and by happenstance a number of like minded individuals who have just invested in new kit for the new season are affected...

I am interested to read this, as I have suffered my first (probably won't be my last) cases of transactions made on my account without my knowledge this month. I also made another purchase from CRC (among others) at the same time as the fraud occurred.

I would be the first to say 'be careful where you lay the blame', but the anecdotal evidence does look worrying for their recent customers. I am sure that the banks combined investigations will find the culprit(s).

I am also very impressed with the way the bank are dealing with it on my behalf, despite being temporarily out of pocket - I can't remember the last time I was flattering about a bank!

HSBC call me all the time about "fraud".

It's false positive... it's not fraud (for the most), and its very very annoying (pissing HSBC!!!).

You'll find that CRC don't even handle your CC details, it's the processor they use.

Thanks for the warning, but why is this in commuting?

I posted in the Café a little while ago on the same subject

https://www.cyclechat.net/

after having my debit card scammed, it seems to be very common, going on what friends have said. HSBC seem to be on the ball with this though, once I had been contacted the card was stopped, the two fraudulent transactions, phone top ups, were refunded, the suspect transaction was investigated and refunded in a couple of days and I had a replacement card in about four days.

Good question, I would have thought the café would be the place for this.

Weird, just had our credit cards replaced in the last couple of weeks (his and hers on one account) and all the card provider said in the written notification was due to suspected fraudulant use the cards were being replaced as a precaution. No suggestion of what the suspected payments were or any request to check statements for bogus transactions, just a set of new cards with new numbers and carry on as usual? I have made several transactions with CRC in the last few months but if I remember correctly they were all or mostly Paypal'd and lots of other card activity so without further info from the card provider no way of establishing who the culprit is and what I can do to avoid further incidents

+1.
I also had the same happen last week after using CRC. After reading this I will be contacting them to let them know.

Looks like CRC could be the culprit in my case, I had brought stuff from them just before my card was scammed.

Damn, so it's not straight forward credit card transactions that are affected but Paypal as well. I guess that is why my cards were stopped but there is no unusual activity showing up on my paypal account either so it looks as though Paypal and Card company were on the ball or maybe they just blocked all cards used for paypal transactions for x number of weeks in a blanket attempt to block out the scammers?

I am quite worried now and may just pull up the drawbridge for a while and not spend any money while this blows over.
