In the run up to Wilko's 'death' he was in a cafe/bar at the top of my street, so ordinary it was hard to believe he was indeed there, but there's no doubting it was Wilko because he was with my ultimate bass-guitar hero, Norman Watt-Roy, his drummer and one other person and we tried ever so hard to pretend we didn't know who they were! A couple of hours later, Wilko was playing his 'last ever show' at the Colne Muni and I have rarely seen the most emotional football crowds more emotional than we were that night. We weren't about to let him go and a huge chant grew to demand he came back after his second encore but, as pointed out, this was a blues festival and there were more acts required to play. What a terrific day that was. Very emotional.
