Ours is now on timed since going away on holiday - daughter texted to ask if she could put it on ! Heat on first thing, then early afternoon until around 4pm as there is then sufficient heat - otherwise the bedrooms would be too warm.

Still not turned on

Wife’s been at the caravan for weekend, so she’ll have had heating on there
(back later this AM)

It was a bit chilly Saturday evening, so l had a fleece pullover on, over a tshirt
And, a woolly hat, that made a lot of difference!!

It’s a rambling Victorian semi, with 11 foot high ceilings, so a lot of space to heat, when we do use it

I was mightily impressed when a young pupil, whose family live in a large Georgian house, proudly mentioned that they'd not turned on the central heating till 14 November last year, sometimes resorting to going up to the first floor bedrooms in the evenings as they were warmer than the ground floor living spaces. Top work.

I finally relented yesterday upon returning to the flat to find it a balmy 15 degrees inside; which IMO is still pretty good going with no heating on an the mean external temperature probably being 3-5 degrees less than this.

The 'stat is now set to 18 degrees and the place feels toasty warm; the rads offering an excellent new spot to dry my washing, the heated towel rail providing unknown luxury in the form of a warm towel out of the shower, an actually dry bath mat in the morning and the ability to dry many, many socks :becool:

I can see how you are in a totally different boat, so can see why you have to manage things much more closely.
I've never lived somewhere with storage heaters - I guess I am lucky in having only lived in 3 different houses with my parents, and then as an adult only two properties.
My parents first house didn't have central heating as such, it was a new build in the 60s with a flat roof, a terrace, and the heating was I believe a single vent in the floor - one per floor, that blew out warm air, but it was terrible iirc, or perhaps it was just too expensive, as I do recall ice on the inside of the windows in the depths of winter.

I was more referring to those with a standard boiler, and radiators throughout their property.

Both my wife and myself are quite hardy, can quite happily sit in dressing gowns in the morning while the stat reads 17c, at 16 it's a bit too cold.
And yet, other times, later in yhe day and dressed, we will feel cold at perhaps 18c.
It makes no sense so it must be more about how you feel, humidity, etc etc.
This is the UK of course with its 'four seasons in one day' so that probably doesn't help.
Should we set the stat to 19 and leave it there ?...probably feel better in the day (not that we generally feel the need to) but then we like windows open at night, just too hot, even last night, window ajar, heating off i woke up sweating.
If only it were as simple as one setting fits all...it simply doesn't for some people

Still looking good even going into next week with Mon & Tue forecast to be 16C outside. Every non-heating day in November really is a bonus.

Currently 12C outside and 17C inside.

It's not so much the cold at this time of year, but the dampness. It's been wet, and in the fens, you're not far from water. So while the house is comfy at 17C in terms of temperature, it's the dampness that gets you.

I'm so pleased that you said this. I thought it was just me. The time I feel coldest is as darkness falls. Later in the evening is much better.

There are lots of other things that affect how comfortable you feel in addition to the air temperature that a thermometer measures:
  • Radiant heat
  • Radiant temperature asymmetry
  • Windchill/draughts
  • Humidity
  • Hunger
  • Fitness level
  • Recent history: a temperature that previously felt ok will no longer feel warm enough if you return to it after getting too cold
