I managed mine without any previous know-how. I got a ring on Ebay for about £2 but really to be sure of the quality you need to go to LBS or on line shops.
Someone did pose some turorial vids on here somewhere.
If you are looking at worn parts worth checking bottom bracket and everything else as you save on post by doing a lot in the same parcel.
