Nope. You can buy a left-handed (footed?) chainset.

as a guess, as most of the world are right handed, right footed, I imagine when the bicycle was invented a right footed person would push off with that foot,:crazy: hence why it's on the right, if the world was more left sided then I suppose it would have been on the left...bit like the tin opener:smile:

i guess this would be the best explanation all the other answers are just rubbish:tongue:

Some day I'm going to build a fixed wheel bike with the drive on the left for a laugh.
Make sure the lock ring is done up REALLY tight ;)!
