as a guess, as most of the world are right handed, right footed, I imagine when the bicycle was invented a right footed person would push off with that foot, hence why it's on the right, if the world was more left sided then I suppose it would have been on the left...bit like the tin opener

i guess this would be the best explanation all the other answers are just rubbish

Odd, the MASSIVE picture of two bikes on the front of my local Go Outdoors has a left handed mountain bike. So someone's making them.
