It made me think of butterfly bars. For me, I think my neck issues came from hill climbing whilst holding the bars tighter for balance.
Seriius neck/shoulder issues have largely gone now I have an ebike for flat feel riding. Whoever, I do recall the neck/shoulder was worse when I went from flats to road bars.

Btw,nit is fairly easy to convert a bike to a flat bar bike.
Btw, you are maybe more in command of what us happening than a specialist. Specialists are sometimes just skilled operations with you being the guinea pig.

Appreciate the thought. Sadly I've seen the scans, and one of my discs is vulnerable - both the doc and I are trying to delay any need for surgery.

Same here. For my knees and hips, technically it is arthritis. Multiple types. My foot problem was also solved by the ebike, there now being less weight on the feet too.

Just maybe I will never have surgery. Hope so. Whilst the hips got critical and I ceased cycling, it was severe foot pain that always went exponential to my ride distance.
Not too unsurprisingly, my last ever unassisted cycling ride was to and up Carlton Bank to watch the 2021 Tour of Britain. I did get up the bank though.

I'll speak to the usual bike fitter I go to, to see what can be done with my current bikes. So long as I can find a position that's more upright and not straining my neck, I should be ok.

Failing that I'll look at some hybrids in the new year, and if that's no good then I'll look at recumbents.

Thanks all for the advice so far.

I just took to going touring after similar advice. Was surprised to find one of my chums wanted to do the same rather than dash about missing everything. Then went abroad. Had some fabulous times and all on flat bars. Yet ride a dutch, Belgian, German bike and ours are still poor on the neck. Don,t know why we do it. Status ?
