Jealous.
Tignes is a seriously good place to be. Part of Espace Killy, but without the pretentious party atmosphere of Val D'Isere, and the prices to match. Wonderful wide pistes, and some good black runs to scare the living daylights out of you, if you so wish. I've done some of my best ski-ing there. Some really, really intense days covering big miles.
Enjoy yourself. When I ski, I'm alive. For the rest of the time I merely exist, although a perfect day on the bike comes close.

Thank you for the advice. I just booked the direct train from St Pancras to Bourg St Maurice on the way out. On the way back I have to get from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord but I have two hours to stagger about in the metro so it shouldn't be too bad. Strangely enough Eurostar allow you to take skis and two bags on the way out but only skis and one bag on the way back from Paris. Bonkers. There are no restrictions on SNCF from Bourg to Paris. The tickets were not cheap but needs must.

Thank you all for your help. I'm very grateful.

For true middle-class points, pay a visit to Le Train Bleu at Gare de Lyon. If you can swallow the eye-watering prices it's an experience to be savoured.

Noting Ganymede's comment on the lack of snow - Tignes is the best place to be as it has access to a glacier. I skied there in July a few years ago...

True - though there is also the glacier on the Val d'Isere side at Pisaillas. I have just spent a fantastic day off-piste on the Tignes side (Vallon de Saches, also known as the Salon des Vaches, ho ho) but it is all rocks. We have skied everywhere this trip but I just wonder what it will be like in April. There are always ways to find snow in Espace Killy!

I was going to post a couple of pix but a) they don't seem to want to load and b) it would probably be unforgiveable anyway. Though one of them had bikes in.

NB There is so little snow that I saw an ESF instructor cycling home down the main street with his skis strapped along his crossbar. Enterprising...

Join this lot, plenty of them and if you can't bum a lift off someone they will surely have an answer to your problem.
Trouble with snowheads is, once you've experienced CC you find it hard to put up with such a badly-modded and organised site! - post something in the wrong section and it just stays there. However it is true that there is lots of info (you have to rummage) and lots of people using the site. I still go back for a couple of long-running threads on certain resorts.

Does anybody know about the luggage check-in for Eurostar at St Pancras? Do they search every bag? My reason for asking is that they seem to have a bit of a draconian alcohol policy. See here....

They don't want anybody on a ski train to put a bottle of spirits in their luggage. Other Eurostar trains are a lot more liberal. I'm travelling in the day time and don't want to get slaughtered on grog......just to take a present to the people whose apartment I'm going to be staying in. Does anybody know the deal?

In Pas de la Casa, I bought a bottle of Glen MacCráp for 5 euros a few years back. Probably pricier in the local Casino in Tignes though. Have a good trip Slomo!"

I've grown out of drinking Clan Dew..." a blend of English wine and four year old Scotch whisky"
Hmmm, it could indeed have been before I reached the level of sophistication wot I have now ...

Hi - I saw a couple having a bottle of vodka removed from their luggage but I'm not sure what happened to it. I think they worry about drunkenness on the train as you can access your baggage throughout the journey, unlike on a plane. The bags all go through the security machine and it's very easy to pick up liquids. There was no massive row so I don't know - best to ring and ask I'd say.
