In my experience there are some great Chinese smartphones out there - check out the forums

I have a Cubot - Quad Core 1.5Ghz with Chinese version of Android on it, minimal bloatware, roots very easily in 5 minutes, 13mp camera and cost £45 a year or so back. I think they now cost something like £90 - but there are loads to choose from.

Apparently some cheap Android phones are being shipped with pre-installed malware. https://www.grc.com/sn/sn-524.htm for text, https://media.grc.com/SN/sn-524-lq.mp3 for audio

"And then the news that, from a German-based cybersecurity firm, G Data, .... they've done a survey of Android malware, Android smartphone malware. And they have seen a 75% increase in what they call "preinstalled malware" during the past six months."

Just FWIW, I'm very happy with my 1st gen Moto G, later models are about double the above on ebay. I don't think there is any reason to pay more than a Moto G.

(only reason I would upgrade it is the first gen didn't have SD card slot, and dual sim would be nice. Later models have both)

I bought my son a Moto G 2nd generation last Christmas. Brilliant. I have a work iPhone but before I retire next year I'll be buying a Moto without hesitation.

I should mention my son has SLD and he finds the phone very simple to use. I spent quite a lot of time playing with the set up. Found it very simple.

Only thing I've struggled with is music but that's probably because I'm over 20!!!!

If anyone can suggest a free or low cost music service that would be great.

Moto G first gen here too. Lovely bit of kit, easy to root. The 4G one is probably a better bet these days- apart from the 4G (duh) it has a Micro SD slot too. 2nd gen has bigger screen but not a higher res one (still 720p), nothing much over the first model really. 3rd gen has a much better camera, still 720p screen but 4G & micro SD slot as standard, faster processor & bigger battery.

Quite a few decent phones to choose from for very little. Biggest drawback tends to be that they get left behind on Android versions very quickly. If you're prepared to either upgrade regularly or aren't bothered with having the latest and greatest OS versions then go for it. (BTW The Moto G's are indeed lovely for the price)

Moto G here too. Earlier one without an SD slot so I paid the extra at the time for the 16Gb version and not (as yet) had any issues of shortage of memory. But then iphoes seem to manage with similar memory restrictions too.
