No computers, not that much TV, no heating in your bedrooms (we lived in married quarters, there was scarcely any heating downstairs), hardly any shops without a fair bus ride, a sensible amount of toys at Christmas....but the world was your oyster

Get up at 5am, go on the airbase (disused) and collect field mushrooms as big as plates. Home, breakfast, clean your teeth if you remembered

then out..ALL day. We'd walk, explore, play, watch wildlife, climb trees, make tree dens, venture further than you'd ever let your own kids go nowadays. Miles and miles, just go where your nose took you. Sadly, that kind of thing claimed the life of my best mates 8 year old brother, but that was one terrible thing in years and years of un restricted childhood (i don't mean completely unrestricted...you did as mum and dad told you

And then home at maybe 6pm for tea.
It wasnt all fantastic, i remember boredom.....but the good far far outweighed the bad.
