Why not go a step further? Dandy-Horse, Velocipede, Safety, Penny-Farthing...

One person's conservative attitude is another person's idea that something's only 'odd' if they haven't heard of it themselves?

'Olaf'? Unusual? Oh ...

The list was compiled based on the number of children given that name, so only 4 olafs in a year made it unusual, or rare. I just think naming a child after a snowman is odd.

No they named their kid after the daughter of the man who founded the pashley company.

Registrars have the power to refuse to register a child with a name that could cause problems, hence no little Hitlers in the playground.

Afraid I have to resurrect this thread as I think I've just come across the most ridiculous name yet. New student here named Miami. I kid thee not. And another called Nation. What the hell is going on here?

In the supermarket the other day, the checkout girl was called Kennedy which I thought was rather cool (unless your surname is Kennedy too in which case it's just silly).

There was a very distinguished caver / cave diver called Oliver Lloyd. Apparently his middle name was Cromwell and his brother was George Washington Lloyd.

I once drove through Corby and remarked to Mrs. P (as we made sure the doors were locked) - 'you know what, I bet there's nobody at all called Jeremy in Corby. Not alive anyway...'.

Olaf is a perfectly good Scandinavian name. Quite a sensible name for a snowman...

In Scotland (I think it is a particularly, though not exclusively Scottish thing) you sometimes get people with given names that are surnames from previous generations. I have a colleague called Campbell, and also know a Lambert and a StJohn.

this has been very popular in America, such as Anderson, Maidson, Kennedy, Brooke, Brady, Harrison, to name a few....

Brooke is my older boy's half sister's name. There are 2 Harrison's in younger son's primary school. Not bad considering it's a single class entry.
