I made this mistake before. I posted an article in "the thing that used to be a newspaper" about the Sun's Page Three. A certain amount of rudeness, sh#t, and alarming aggression came my way. What is about sea air on the South coast?

People are dumb, soap actors who play a baddie role get abuse in the street, not everyone can or does make the distinction from something so obviously fictitious as Coronation Street for example let alone something that has been marketed as a motoring journalism show with entertaining challenges thrown in.
Like it or not, there is a rump of society that takes the pantomime character JC has created for his TV persona as a real and authoritive figure on motoring and the acceptable attitudes they can have to it and fellow road users.
Its not the first time he has thought he was above the law, he blocked access to a public right of way near his Isle of Man cottage (Lighthouse !) after a long battle he lost the case, obnoxious is a word that springs to mind.

That's spot on, but I thought he was one of Clarkson's mates, or was that him toadying to his guests again?

I also think he's right on the money. The sad thing being, it was about three years after that was published that Clarkson & Co premeditatedly used the racist term 'slope' to anchor a 'joke'. It didn't just slip out in a moment of boyish mischief. Clarkson in particular is way too clever for that. No, they thought it up, weighed it up, and went with it.
But again, why is Coogan in pot/kettle territory? I've ever seen him do anything remotely like this.
I think that's the point of the article. I don't think Steve Coogan would say he's a bastion of morals, but he's intelligent enough to recognise the difficult boundaries between comedy, satire, hypocrisy-busting and plain bullying.
