Thanks, I phrased my question badly. All I basically meant was 'Are the BB and spanner compatible without the need for the adapter?'.
You've answered that for me.

Got the adapter ring now.

It fits perfectly over the BB.
However, it's a tight fit for the spanner hole. I think I'll have to tap it in with a hammer.
Very poor design!

I remember having to tap it in with a rubber mallet. Very tight fit. Then, when the job was done, I tapped it out only to discover it had split 🙁

It's not a job I plan on doing very often, so I might just leave the adapter fitted to the spanner.

I've recently had this as I've just got my bike road ready again. Clean and grease: saddle clamp bolts; seat post clamp; BB threads; pedal threads; cassette and grease the hub where the cassette slides on; handle bar clamp. If not of that works there's the chain ring bolts and also the cleat bolts on your shoes. Good luck

But you may wish to consider replacing the large chainring. I'm guessing you're a 'big ring' man.

You're right, it is a spindle.

Clean that thing with alcohol or mineral spirits. The spindle is not intended to rotate within the inner bearing races, rather it's a slip fit that would be better as a mild press fit, therefore I would apply green loctite( made for slip fit applications) it will protect the spindle and more or less lock it to the inner race ( no wear on the spindle). Use blue loctite gel (made by Permatex, not Loctite) for the threads and torque to spec.
A few years ago I switched from grease to blue loctite for most bike fasteners, it does not loosen like grease, protects from water ingress and disimilar metal corrosion similarly.
Careful with threadlocker compound. Red will NOT come undone, and on typical fine threads of a bicycle the torch won't un-do it either.
I'd replace the chain, cogs and that trashed large chainring.

Note: Permatex brand threadlocker gel works like magic because it stays put, therefore I reccomend. Little tube of the stuff is wildly expensive though (like £18 for 2oz.) That little tube could last 30 years though.
