Hi

As some of you may have read I am returning to cycling after a long break and need to get some clothing... I do not want to spend a fortune just yet so what do you think of these options.... just for road use...

If youave an Aldi near you they recently had a cycling event and may have some stock left I just got some shorts for £8
If your not using clipess pedals ( pedals your clip onto I know confusing) you don't need and special shoes and as it's summer now do you need trousers . When I restarted I just wore tracksuit bottoms for the first six months . A cycling top with pockets in the back is worth considering

I do have some training shoes I use at the gym but the sole is a not thick or strong so maybe the pedal would cut in, was looking for something maybe thicker... I will look at tracksuit bottoms as well

We do have an Aldi near us so I will call in and see what they have ..

Tenn stuff is generally well regarded at the price point.
Some Muddy Fox stuff is fair value for money, other stuff not so much - and as @13 rider says, if you don't need clipless, why not just try a pair of stiff soled trainers / walking shoes you can use for other stuff as well? I've got a pair of Karrimor walking shoes that I use on the hybrid with 'flat' pedals.
And while I haven't any direct experience of those Decathlon liner shorts, I've got several pairs of their 500-series bibshorts and they're difficult to fault at the money.

As @13 rider said I ride in trainers, but as others have mentioned you do need to get ones with a fairly stiff sole.

That was my thinking, the trainers I use at the gym are new but have a thin sole which I think the pedals may cut into so may look to see what trainers I can get with better soles... Not going to so loads of miles yet

These are the Aldi offers - it's a couple of weeks ago now so it will be whatever is left in store, but they might have started reducing the prices if you're lucky...

Thank you, I will take a look

If your pedals eat shoe soles then change them! Most bikes come with cheap rubbish pedals which pass legal requirements but little more. Wellgo, Union and Vavert all do big grippy rubber pedals for under £20. If you get ones with fairly big pads, you don't even need particularly stiff soles: I ride mostly in lightweight bouncy zero trainers aka plimsolls these days since busting a foot up last year.

Waterproof trousers: they work and I've other tenn stuff which has been good value, but you do have to slow down to avoid sweating yourself wet. If it's mainly to stop the thighs getting cold and seizing up, consider Rainlegs.

I was looking at the Decathlon website earlier, seem to have some good stuff at cheap prices.. The shorts I linked are from there to wear under tracksuit bottoms etc..
If you're loooking at Decathlon, although these are in the hiking section, they have quite thick soles and are good for use as cycling shoes with flat pedals - I've got a pair and they grip well on Welgo V8 copy pedals I use.

Tenn have an outlet (https://www.tenn-outlet.co.uk/) that can save a little extra. As it's an outlet, sizes/styles are not always available.

Myself, skip the tracksuit bottoms/undershorts and get yourself into lycra. Yes, everyone except the lean looks pretty terrible but it's practical. Bib shorts means you'll save yourself the "embarrassment" of your arse hanging out the back.

I'm with MJR... i don't feel thick/rigid soles are necessary. Most of the summer I'm in baseball type shoes and throughout the winter it's walking boots or skate shoes... neither feels better nor worse than the other. I'll don some padded under-shorts if I'm planning on doing more than 30 miles, but other than that, I'll happily cycle in civilian clothes.
