Road.

Ped had crossed from south footpath and was 3/4 across when he was hit. Cyclist claims ped walked in front of him, ped claims cyclist came off the north footpath at speed without looking.

GC

The ped was the most vulnerable road user, therefore by the strict liability argument...........

Absent any actual facts or anything, I agree with this: cyclists bear the lion's share of the responsibility to avoid collision with peds

I agree, but peds must take some responsibility to ensure the road is clear before they cross. There isn't much you can do when they run into the side of your bike, as one did with me.

IIRC of the subset of cyclist/pedestrian collisions, pedestrian fault is 60% vs cyclist fault 40%, and that cyclists mostly tend to come off worse than pedestrians.

Had a great one last week. With wife cycling along bridleway/cyclepath/footpath ped up ahead going same direction. He was keeping well over to the left but wife called out "bikes approaching" in good time. He was wearing earphones and still jumped as she came into his line of vision.

I'm not interested in apportioning blame but getting the rider to identify himself to the pedestrian. It would be the decent thing to do.

I frequently come across peds on country lanes (paging @Fnaar) but have yet to hit one.

I see them a mile off walking along taking in the country air, oblivious (seemingly) to their surroundings.

Ding, ding....nothing. I roll closer...ding ding....nothing.

Now less than 10m away...ding ding.....bingo the penny drops, they hear me and look round and pull each other to the side of the road.

No bother to me. I was aware of them, and was prepared to stop anyway. I share the road. It's not mine by right, they have as much right to be there as me. They are not inconveniencing me in any way, however no matter how I do it I always seem to get a comment as I pass like: 'Don't you have a bell?'

I regularly come across pedestrians on country lanes, but I just pass them quietly leaving plenty of space. I've never had a comment from them, other than the odd 'good morning'. Why you feel the need to ring your bell or make them move to the side of the road, I don't know.

More seriously, the AirZound is a last measure

We have a cricket club I Fareham who insist on using the cycle path as a locker room, set up their score tables on it and also a viewing area with chairs, sun loungers etc

Then having already restricted the width, they then stand chatting in the few gaps

If the bell, and a polite " Can I get past" is greeted by "go away " spelt with an F......... Then the AirZound at full volume is justified

@Hip Priest I am travelling between 12-25mph, so unless I want to spend all day following peds and their dogs (on extendable leads) that are filling the lane walking abreast at 3mph, I therefore would like to pass. A bell ringing is recognised as an alert that a cycle is there. I slow down to pass, I don't barge past. I don't approach silently and just whoosh past. I do what I believe is the correct approach?

I don't know what your comment 'make them move' is supposed to mean, but perhaps you'd like to explain how you would get past politely?
