How does your commute compare using different modes ?

I work out of town, and my commute is about 5 miles each way..

Outward commute
Cycling
5 mins - Putting on cycling gear
3 mins - defeating security
20 mins - Cycle commuting
5 mins - Changing for work
33 mins - total

Motorcycle
4 mins - Putting on motorcycle gear
5 mins - defeating security
12 mins - Motorrycle commuting
4 mins - Changing for work
25 mins - total

Car
5 mins - Getting Dressed
1 min - Starting Car
15 mins - commuting
0 mins - Changing for work
21 mins - total

Having just done the exercise, I am actually quite surprised at the outcome.

How do your commuting times and modes compare when doing an end to end calc ?

Well I don't get changed at the end of my commute and can usually park the bike at my destination so get bike - 1 min, ride in 20, lock bike 1 min, walk into office 30 sec. If I took the car it would probably involve a 15 minute walk from somewhere that I could find to park for free and another 10 mins driving around looking for the parking space and that's excluding the 15 minute drive after getting the car from the garage (shed doors are less faff).

For some people this becomes a little interesting. For instance if I worked it out commuting by car would be about 40min quicker each way. However if I didn't commute by bike I'd need to factor in training time, this would actually mean because I didn't commute in I'd lose about 45min/day.

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Bike: 28-35 mins for 10 miles plus 5 mins changing = 33-40 mins
Car: 25 (or 35) mins driving, 5 mins parking, 20 (or 0 depending where I park) mins walk = 50/40 mins; if I park at work for over 5 hours it's £25, so I park further away where it's £3.50

Bike wins almost every time. Like GrasB above I'd need to do seperate training if I used the car more often and I just don't have the time available for that.

The difference for me is that I live fairly central in town, and work out in the sticks. The commuter traffic is all heading the other way on my commute and the works car park is free and in the grounds of the building.

8 miles.

Scooter = 20mins
Bicycle = 35mins (40 just now but ive just started so hoping to get down)
Train = 45mins
Car = 45mins
Bus = 60mins

You will never get better than a scooter but I want to get fit so decided to cycle.

I assuming he means walking out the door to starting the car rolling. That well could take 1 min putting bits in the boot & getting out of the drive etc.

Then he isn't being consistent.

Getting bike out etc needed.

Depends on traffic a little but typically I'd estimate roughly:

Cycling:
Put on cycling gear: 2 mins
Get bike out of shed: 2 min
Cycle to work: 35 mins
Secure bike at work: 2 mins
Shower and change at work: 15 mins
-----------------------------------
Net Time: 56 mins
Enjoyment handicap: -15 mins (or -5 mins if gale force headwind)
Corrected time: 41 mins

Motorcycling:
Dressing and puting on motorbike gear: 4 mins
Uncover and remove locks from bike: 2 mins
Motorbike to work: 20 mins
Secure bike at work: 2 mins
Change at work: 2 mins
-----------------------------------
Net Time: 31 mins (add 5 mins if raining and additional waterproofs required)
Enjoyment handicap: -10 mins
Corrected time: 21 mins

Driving:
Get dressed: 2 mins
Faff about plugging in ipod and selecting music: 1 min
Drive to work: 30 mins
-----------------------------------
Net Time: 33 mins
Enjoyment handicap: +20 mins
Corrected time: 53 mins

Cycling is further enhanced by the fact that I don't need to take time to shower at home before I leave, offsetting the time I take to shower at work from total elapsed time from getting out of bed.
