What's the cheapest way of doing this?
Depends how sophisticated you want to get but from 100ish upwards. Read the reviews. Two disc options are the best for using as a backup for your data as they save it to both discs. If you don't want that, single disc NAS's are cheaper.

"So I invested in a NAS, a Zyxel nsa325, Synology just being a bit too expensive fro my pocket."
Oh, I know what you mean. No, hang on. I don't know what you mean. I have absolutely no idea what you mean. Is that even English?

OK, so, playing. One of the things the NAS I have does is automatically upload to youtube or flickr. I've just enabled the youtube one, drop a file in a directory on the NAS and it uploads it without intervention. You can do the same for Flickr but for that you can even configure it so you plug your USB stick/drive into the NAS, press a button, it copies all the files off and uploads them to Flickr. Damn clever eh: I knew you'd think so......

OK, I setup external access now. Forced it to use https, though I can't find anything about beefing up security on the actual login. Only one port on the router is open and I haven't setup ftp yet. Anyone done better on the security front?

The Stranglers foresaw this development in their song "Something Better Change":

Don't you like the way, I dance? Does it bug you?
Don't you like the cut of my clothes?
Don't you like the way, I seem to enjoy it?
Stick my fingers right up your NAS

OK, all set up and working well.

What do people use, software wise to rip DVD's? I haven't set anything like that up yet and am considering if it's worth the effort as all the ripping software costs. In the same vein do any of the popular download sites allow download to a NAS or is it all locked to a PC?

Have you got the full version Ian, because the free one just says it can't decode it and to upgrade?

I don't know mate, I downloaded it a couple of years back. Deff didn't pay for it.
I just rip the DVD's and put them on my NAS drive.
