XBMC runs very nicely on a jailbroken Apple TV. It's a lot cheaper and far quieter than a laptop. Other media players will do the same thing, but may not look nice enough to be allowed in the 'living area'
The laptop wouldn't be there permanently, what to connect to the pc is something I've not made my mind up about yet, either sound or vision wise.

Also yet to investigate Android and apple connectivity to the NAS.

Do you have a SATA hard drive. On my PC when I put windows on I had to press a button part way through installation to load the SATA drivers from disk as XP didn't support it at the time. Was years ago.

I have xbmc running on a Rasberry.Pi its a bit clunky but it works although will only play a handful of file types, I also have the main (livingroom) xbmc player installed on to an Acer revo aspire which works perfectly, nice and fast and play all file types.

My NAS is a little noisy but hidden out of ear shot, I believe unRaid will work on a v low powered system so could be almost silent if you had the correct setup

Slight resurrection because I've been looking at xbmc with a view to some kind of media server. I find xbmc to be a bit geeky, as in some things work really well and others are just shoot. 4od, itv player, itunes, intenet streaming, as well as music and pictures is what I want. Still playing with xbmc but.....

OK, all set up and working well.

What do people use, software wise to rip DVD's? I haven't set anything like that up yet and am considering if it's worth the effort as all the ripping software costs. In the same vein do any of the popular download sites allow download to a NAS or is it all locked to a PC?
Handbrake.
